S’ner, Nexus capture SIPA baker’s dozen

Student journalists from The Southerner and Nexus won a baker’s dozen of 2015 Southern Interscholastic Press Association Writing Contest awards, SIPA officials announced at their annual convention in Columbia, S.C., on Sunday.

Grady journalists earned four first-place awards, four second-place awards, four third-place awards, and an honorable mention.

First-place winners included Mallory Hazell (sports column), Ben Simonds-Malamud (feature story), Josh Weinstock (entertainment/feature column) and the reporting team of Olivia Volkert and Weinstock (sports story).

Second-place winners included Declan Farrisee (review story), Mary Claire Morris (news story), Margo Stockdale (entertainment/feature column) and Ryan Switzer (personality feature story).

Third-place winners included J.D. Capelouto (news feature story), Quinn Mulholland (news story) and the reporting teams of Reilly Blum and Gracie Griffith (sports story) and Keegan Hasson and Jennifer Steckl (feature story).

The Southerner staff earned an honorable mention in the staff editorial category.
