Former President Jimmy Carter said he has cancer.

“Recent liver surgery revealed that I have cancer that now is in other parts of my body,” Carter, 90,  said in a statement. ”I will be rearranging my schedule as necessary so I can undergo treatment by physicians at Emory Healthcare.”

Carter said more details will be made public as facts become known possibly next week.

Carter underwent surgery to remove a mass from his liver on Aug. 3. At that time, the prognosis was “excellent for a full recovery,” the former president said.

Carter was elected for one term as president in 1976 after serving as Georgia’s governor.
