Auschwitz was liberated on Jan. 27, 1945 by the Red Army. In 2005, the United Nations declared Jan. 27 as International Remembrance Holocaust Day. The day was pledged to honor the six million Jews and people from other minorities who passed in the Nazi genocide. In addition, the U.N. would continue to develop educational programs to inform and prevent such history from repeating itself.
January 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. This year’s theme is Holocaust “Remembrance for Dignity and Human Rights.”
