Changes to student loan relief causes fewer to be eligible

The U.S. Department of Education recently altered its guidelines, regarding Pres. Biden’s student loan plan, which was handled by private lenders but guaranteed by the government, including Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL) and Perkins loans, according to news reports. As of Sept. 29, 2022, borrowers with federal student loans not held by ED cannot obtain one-time debt relief by consolidating those loans into Direct Loans. The change was initiated because of a lawsuit filed by six states about Biden’s loan forgiveness plan. That legal challenge, which specifically raises questions about loans through the FFEL program, begins an immediate temporary restraining order to halt the program.
