Junior starting lineman Jalen Whitt will likely miss Saturday’s preseason scrimmage against Mays after injuring his knee in Tuesday’s practice. The extent of the injury is unknown.
Whitt is an essential starting offensive lineman who makes key blocks, creates holes for the running game and provides starting quarterback Caylin Newton extra time in the pocket to make defensive reads, teammates said.
“It hurts a lot because he’s a vet and a critical part of our offense, but we are going to have to work with what we have and make it happen,” teammate Menra Scales said.
Despite Whitt’s injury, Scales said he has high expectations for the year. The season starts with Saturday’s 7 pm scrimmage at Lakewood Stadium, and Grady’s first regular season game is Aug. 22 against Washington.
