When President Jimmy Carter found out Bobby Agee, who worked at Manuel's Tavern, was related to James Agee, the author of his favorite book, "Let Us Now Praise Famous Men," Carter signed a copy of the book and wrote a letter to Bobby, explaining its significance in his life. The next time Carter visited Manuel's, Bobby visited his table to thank him for the letter. Carter ended up inviting him to sit down while he told the story of a documentary he made in his backyard in Plains about James Agee.
