On April 20, State Senator and from Atlanta Public Schools Board of Education member Jason Esteves announced his campaign for governor of Georgia for the 2026. Esteves campaign was moved up after the announcement from U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath that she would be suspending her campaign. Additionally, one republican noted him being the “most electable of the potential Democratic candidates.”
Esteves entered the race with goals to boost small business, expand healthcare and fight against President Donald Trump’s policies. If Esteves wins the election in 2026, he would be the first African American and first Latino elected to the job.
