We regret to share that Lamar Young, Midtown’s most veteran school counselor, passed away unexpectedly.
All Midtown parents were informed of the loss in an email from APS Campus Messenger this afternoon.
“This is an awful loss for the whole school community as he touched thousands of lives in his school counseling career,” the message said. “We are all grieving during this difficult time.”
In the next few days, students and parents will receive information regarding the response and adjustment within the counseling center. The APS district support team will be on campus tomorrow to support any student or faculty in need.
The Southerner shares its condolences.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Grady and now, Midtown Community! I did not know Mr. Young long (only one school year) for my son but, in that short amount of time this dedicated man tried everything he could to get my son on the right track to success. My son will admit being a 16 year old (at the time) he thought he knew more than Mr. Young and everyone else around him but, will admit he recalls all the times he spent with Mr. Young and him just trying to “kick knowledge into him”
Rest peacefully Mr. Young and thank you for trying every pathway to trying to get my son back on the right track.

Heartfelt Condolences to the Midtown (Grady) Family
Dear Midtown (Grady) Family,
My heart is heavy as I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Mr. Lamar Young. As a former PTA president and parent of two Grady High School graduates, I am truly saddened by this loss.
Mr. Young was a man of few words but a big heart, and his impact on so many students, including my own children, will never be forgotten. His kindness, dedication, and unwavering support for the school community touched countless lives.
To the entire Midtown (Grady) family, please know that I am keeping each and every one of you in my thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
With heartfelt sympathy,

The Midtown/Grady Community,
I am very sad to learn of the passing of Lamar. We worked together helping students struggling with mathematics. He was wonderful outlining remedial steps to assist students’ with their math comprehension.
My prayers go with him and his family.

This is a tremendous loss to the Midtown community! Thousands of students and parents from both Grady, then Midtown Highschool had the opportunity to interact with this dedicated human being. Mr. Young was a true partner in helping me to not only navigate the college process; he was also a partner in helping me to educate my children. Sending condolences to his students, colleagues and family.
