APS Superintendent Erroll Davis announced an investigation into allegations of address fraud and illegal recruitment at Grady at a press conference on Dec. 9, saying one third of the players on the football team may be out of district.
Head coach Ronnie Millen—who has been with Grady since 1989 and recently celebrated his 100th win—has been reassigned while the investigation unfolds. Representatives from Georgia High School Association, which oversees high school athletics, have been informed of the investigation.
Davis said an anonymous tip was sent to APS offices on Nov. 7, and the investigation began immediately.
“We are always auditing enrollment documents and following up on allegations brought to our attention,” Davis said.
After a preliminary investigation, the system decided to interview everyone involved with the football program, Davis said. Many had the same address listed on eligibility forms, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“We are ferreting out fraud, and want to ensure that all students can participate in strong a athletic program,” Davis said. “We will not tolerate inappropriate conduct by anyone in our schools.”
Davis said parents who signed affidavits with a false address could face criminal charges of perjury.
“It is a criminal act to falsify information on school enrollment documents,” Davis said. “This is a strain on our resources, including our social workers. It impacts safety, challenges the district’s communication efforts and it takes away the opportunity for other students to attend the school through our legitimate transfer process.”
When asked if APS plans to perform an audit of all schools and teams in the district, Davis said, “We plan to start with this initial investigation and see where it takes us.”
Grady principal Vincent Murray was out of the building and unavailable for comment. He did, however, release a letter addressed to parents, teachers and students. The letter mirrored Davis’s statement nearly exactly.
Grady Athletic Director Kathleen Washington, who is in charge of certifying all athletes at Grady, declined comment.
APS Athletic Director Jeff Beggs also declined comment.

“We are always auditing enrollment documents and following up on allegations brought to our attention,” Davis said. Mr. Davis, you haven’t done such a stellar job of “following up on allegations brought to (y)our attention” of a student being violently assaulted and seriously injured at Inman Middle School. In fact, you and your staff have diligently endeavored to cover that one up. Where are your priorities?

“We will not tolerate inappropriate conduct by anyone in our schools.” – Erroll Davis
Oh, REALLY, Mr. Davis? You mean, you won’t tolerate inappropriate conduct unless it serves YOUR cover-up agenda?? You seem to have a self-serving selective view of what “inappropriate conduct…in our schools” is. You should be fired.

Really, Erroll Davis is going to cone out against others for ethics violations?
