The Grady Grey Knights basketball teams took on the Mays Raiders for their first preseason game on Nov. 12. The girls team battled neck and neck for the majority of the game, winning 49-46, and the boys team dominated for the entirety of the game, winning 77-56. Boys coach Brian Weeden said the victory was a good sign, but the team still needs improvement.
“We have a long ways to go,” Weeden said, ”especially with the defense. We’re looking forward to a great season, even better than last year. That’s what you try to do.”
The girls team maintained a close score throughout the game, all the way down to the last minute and a half. The Knights were down by three. After a long possession, Erica Gibson landed a jump-shot, sparking a burst of Grady momentum. Soon after, Van Shackleford converted a Mays turnover into points, swishing a three-pointer to close the game. Gibson led the game in scoring, with 19 points.
The boys team commenced with a slow start, but pulled ahead after the first quarter. They kept a steady lead for most of the game, and controlled the Raiders with a 21-point gap by the end of the game. Tyrius Walker led the game in scoring with 27 points. Both teams are preparing for their season-opener on Nov. 23.
