‘Suicide Squad’ Pits Evil Against Evil for Good
More stories from Molly Haynes
Turning the typical good versus evil plot-line on its head, “Suicide Squad” tells a story of evil fighting against evil, working for good. U.S. intelligence officer, Amanda Walker (Viola Davis), assembles an army of detained supervillains as a last line of defense. They are brought together to capture the escaped Enchantress (Cara Delevingne) and her evil brother, Incubus (Alain Chanoine), both of whom are angry at the human race for not praising them as they did hundreds of years ago. The army of super-villains are given weapons and backup, and officially become the “Suicide Squad.” At the same time, the disturbed Joker (Jared Leto) has plans of his own to reunite with the love of his life.
“Suicide Squad,” based on the DC Comics universe, features characters including Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Slipknot (Adam Beach). The film was written and directed by David Ayer, whose movies include “Fast and Furious” (2001), “End of Watch’’ (2012), and “Fury” (2014).
“Suicide Squad“ is the latest in a successful line of comic book franchises coming to the big screen. It delivers on its promise of the action-driven adrenaline rush for which this genre is known, complete with complex makeup and fantastic costumes.
However, “Suicide Squad“ may not be deserving of all the hype. While the characters are well-developed throughout the movie, the plot moves too quickly, leaving many loose ends for people who don’t have previous knowledge of the original comic books. One highlight of the movie, is the ominous relationship between Harley Quinn and The Joker. The chemistry and the commitment between the two characters could be felt through the screen, which is a break from their relationship in the comics. Another standout performance came from Will Smith, who shined in the role of a distressed father with an evil flare.
Overall, even though it can be hard to follow, “Suicide Squad” is a fun watch. Fans of DC Comics are treated to references to other storylines from the comics, and the characters hold viewers’ interest with intense emotion and witty humor. This movie is great for a date or just a good time with your friends. “Suicide Squad” can be seen at Midtown Art Cinema, AMC Dine-In theaters, Regal Hollywood Theaters, and Regal Atlantic Station Stadium.
