Georgia Governor Nathan Deal today issued a state of emergency ahead of Hurricane Florence, which is expected to hit the coastal areas of South Carolina and North Carolina and possibly moving west toward Northeast Georgia. The Category 4 hurricane is expected to make landfall in the next 24 to 36 hours and has led to mass evacuations of the coastal Carolinas area.

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Meria Carstarphen said the district will be monitoring the weather situation and the potential for high winds  and heavy rains over the weekend. On Sept. 11, 2017, remnants from Tropical Storm Irma shut down APS and many school districts across the state.
