For the senior athletes on the Lady Knights volleyball team, tomorrow’s match against the Jackson Jaguars and Douglas Astros will be their last high-school home game. To commemorate the finality of these players’ season, the team plans to hold a ceremony tomorrow to recognize the seniors.
The first match will take place against Jackson High School starting at 5 p.m. The second match against Douglas High School will begin at 7 p.m. Both matches will be held in the Grady gym.
To make the night memorable, Knights coach Audrelia Austin has organized a special program that will take place between the two matches. During the ceremony, the team will recognize each senior and offer gifts and tokens of appreciation. The details of the ceremony, however, have yet to be released.
“It will be a surprise,” Austin said. “I don’t want [the seniors] to know. It has been thought out, it will be personable, and it will be something from the team to them. It will be more momentous than just a plaque.”
Senior Miller Lansing understands the significance of her final home matches and hopes many fans will be present to make the night even more special.
“I would like people to come watch,” Lansing said. “Volleyball gets zero love.”
Although the team will take time tomorrow for celebration and recognition, the team has not forgotten its intent toward victory.
Before the game, Austin plans to tell her players to “win it for the seniors.” Austin said each match is important to win, and a victory tomorrow is even more imperative because of the upcoming Regional Tournament, which will take place on Oct. 8.
“Right now, we are in the portion of the season where we are getting ready for the playoffs,” Austin said. “Each game needs to be treated as if we are auditioning for the playoffs.”
Lansing, however, is confident in the Knights ability to defeat the two teams tomorrow. The Knights have competed against both the Jaguars and Astros on previous occasions, and easily defeated both teams after only two games in best-out-of-three-games matches.
“We better win because these are winnable teams, and I don’t want there to be any scares,” Lansing said.
Because tomorrow is the last home game of the season, several seniors feel saddened by the realization that their four-year high-school career in volleyball will soon be over. Lansing specifically regrets that she had only a single season to work under Coach Austin, who started the job this year.
“I wish she would have gotten to us sooner,” Lansing said.
Tomorrow, Austin will ensure the players remember their final two home matches as well as their entire high-school volleyball experience.
“We are going to make sure they’re recognized and that the last home game goes out with a bang,” Austin said.
