AAA boys Final Four includes an Ironic Two

The boys AAA Final Four was determined this weekend, and no matter how Grady fans feel about it, they can definitely see the results as a victory for irony.

In Saturday’s games at the Northwest Georgia Trade Center in Dalton, two teams from Region 5-AAA, Grady’s region, battled the two schools that knocked the Grey Knights out of the state tournament this year and last.

Washington, the No. 3 seed from Grady’s region, defeated Allatoona in the early game, 59-56.  A year ago, Allatoona defeated Grady in heart-breaking fashion 56-55 after a bench technical on Grady enabled the last-second 3-point basket that ended Grady’s season.  Grady defeated Washington twice during the 2011-2012 regular season but lost to them in the region 5-AAA consolation game.

Columbia, the champion of Grady’s region,  defeated Carollton 50-31 in the late game. Carrollton beat Grady last Friday, 70-57, in the first round of the state tournament.

When your region rivals square off against your tournament nemeses, for whom do you root?

Let’s hope the teams in the region form an alliance of sorts, so the Grady faithful can cheer with abandon for Region 5 in the Final Four this Friday in Macon.

There could be an all-Region 5 championship final if Washington beats Drew and Columbia beats Eagles Landing on March 9.  If they both win, the two remaining Region 5 representatives would meet in the championship game on March 10.

Mr. Winter thanks Phillip Suitts for the idea for this post.
