Six Southerner staffers earn 2013 Civic Journalism Awards

Involvement through News and Civics, or Inc, has announced the winners of its 2013 Civic Journalism Awards. Archie Kinnane and Axel Olson earned first place honors for Grady High School for the story, “Uproar follows changes at North Atlanta.” Kinnane and Josh Weinstock won second place for the story, “Word of Mouth,” and Joe Lavine captured third for his commentary piece, “Guns and Love.” Orli Hendler earned honorable mention honors for her feature, “Crème de la Crim: A day in the life at Crim High School dispels myths.”

The Southerner’s Darriea Clark also earned first place in the competition for her story, “Food group provides aid.”  Clark won as a member of VOX Teen Newspaper, another of Inc’s pilot-program partners.

Student journalists whose publications are Inc partners were eligible to compete for 2013 Civic Journalism Awards.
